In conjunction with his visit to stage Aspects of Andy for Indianapolis Ballet’s New Works Showcase Series, the Indianapolis School of Ballet is thrilled to present a special “Broadway in Indy” edition of its Dance with the Masters class series featuring Broadway choreographer and director Joshua Bergasse. The following guidelines should be followed for this two-hour Broadway jazz class:

  • The IB studios will open at 10:00 a.m. to allow for warm-up on site
  • Participants are expected to be warmed up and in Studio 1 by the start of the 11:00 a.m. class
  • Ballet, jazz or canvas shoes are encouraged; NO black leather or rubber soled shoes will be allowed

On Broadway, Bergasse choreographed the revival of On The Town, for which he received an Astaire Award and was nominated for the TONYDrama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Also on Broadway, Joshua choreographed the revival of Gigi, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is currently on tour in the United States. Most recently, Joshua directed and choreographed the current New York revival of Smokey Joe’s Café – The Songs of Leiber and Stoller.

Off Broadway credits include Sweet Charity (Chita Award winner, Lortel Award nomination), Cagney (Drama Desk, Astaire, Outer Critics Circle Award), Bomb-Itty of Errors, and Captain Louie. Some of Bergasse’s other credits as a choreographer include West Side Story (Stratford Festival), The Golden Apple, Little Me, and It’s A Bird… It’s A Plane… It’s Superman! (City Center Encores!), The Royal Family of Broadway and Pirates of Penzance (Barrington Stage), and CandideGuys and Dolls, and The Sound of Music (Carnegie Hall). Bergasse also directed and choreographed Hazel (Drury Lane Theatre), West Side Story (North Carolina Theater), and co-directed/choreographed the Bombshell on Broadway concert at the Minskoff Theatre. This past summer in celebration of Jerome Robbins’ and Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthdays Bergasse reimagined his choreography from ON THE TOWN for both the National Symphony in DC and the famous INTREPID Museum, and WEST SIDE STORY for the world-renowned Boston Symphony at Tanglewood.

For film/television, Bergasse won the Emmy Award for his choreography on NBC’s musical drama SMASH. He also choreographed multiple segments on So You Think You Can Dance.  For PBS, he choreographed Sinatra: A Voice for a Century, and A Capitol Fourth.  Bergasse also choreographed an episode of Jessica Jones for Netflix.
