Mary Ann Schaefer joined the growing list of dancers from Indiana returning to the Hoosier State to launch Indianapolis Ballet as a Founding Company Member, beginning with roles in its 2017 production of The Nutcracker.
Schaefer was born in Memphis, Tenn., where at age nine she took her first ballet classes at the Allegro Ballet Academy. After moving to Indianapolis at age 12, she studied at the Clara R. Noyes Academy of Ballet Internationale until its closing in 2005, and continued her training under Alyona Yakovleva and Tatiana Pali at the Russian Ballet Academy of Indiana. In 2010, she competed at the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, Fla., making it to the Final round as well as receiving a Jury Award.
After receiving a scholarship to attend the Summer Intensive program of Ballet West in Salt Lake City in 2009, Schaefer would join Ballet West II for two seasons starting in 2012 and stayed on as a supplemental artist for Ballet West’s 2014-2015 season. Recently, Mary Ann has performed as a Featured Guest Artist in the “Pointe to the Cure” event in Indianapolis in 2015, a supplemental dancer in Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s The Nutcracker under Artistic Director Tom Mossbrucker for two years and a member of The Suzanne Farrell Ballet for two seasons, where she had the honor of performing Balanchine ballets at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
